When you are working with a flagship camera like the 8K Insta360 Luna Ultra, the stakes are high. Whether you are running-and-gunning on a film set or capturing dynamic action shots, your camera rig is the only thing standing between your expensive gear and the concrete.
For a long time, creators hesitated to use 3D printed parts for critical camera mounting. Standard plastics like PLA warp in a hot car, and threading a metal bolt directly into raw plastic is a guaranteed way to strip a hole after just a few uses. But thanks to advances in engineering-grade FDM filaments and the adoption of heat-set threaded inserts, 3D printing can now produce modular, professional-grade camera gear that rivals machined aluminum.
Here is a look at how we built a custom, rock-solid gear set for the Insta360 Luna Ultra.
The Material Matters: Siraya Tech ABS HT Black
Camera gear faces a unique set of challenges. It needs to survive hot outdoor shoots, endure the mechanical stress of heavy lenses and batteries, and ideally, feature a matte black finish to prevent unwanted light reflections into the lens.
For this rig, we bypassed standard filaments and used Siraya Tech Fibreheart ABS High-Temp / High-Flow Filament.

Standard materials simply don't cut it for professional rigs. The high heat deflection temperature of our ABS HT ensures that the rig won't soften or deform when left in the summer sun or a hot gear bag. Furthermore, its incredible layer adhesion and structural rigidity mean it can handle the leverage of heavy top handles and friction arms without cracking. The smooth, matte black finish directly off the build plate gives it that injection-molded, professional aesthetic that videographers demand.

The Secret to Modularity: Heat-Set Threaded Inserts
A camera cage is only useful if you can attach accessories to it. However, threading a 1/4"-20 or M4 bolt directly into 3D printed plastic will quickly wear out the threads, leaving your handles wobbly and your gear unsafe.
Heat-Set Threaded Inserts
These small, knurled brass cylinders are the secret weapon of functional 3D printing. By designing a slightly tapered hole in your CAD model, you can use a soldering iron to heat the brass insert. As the brass heats up, it locally melts the ABS plastic, allowing you to press the insert flush into the part. Once the plastic cools, it permanently locks around the knurling, giving you incredibly strong, reusable metal threads inside your plastic print.
The golden brass inserts sit perfectly flush against the black ABS HT. This allows the user to securely bolt on modular handles, cold shoe mounts, and brackets, torquing them down without any fear of stripping the plastic.

A Massive Shoutout to CNC Kitchen
We can't talk about heat-set inserts in the 3D printing community without acknowledging the pioneer who brought this technique to the mainstream: Stefan from CNC Kitchen.
Stefan has done incredible, data-driven work testing the pull-out strength of various inserts, demonstrating exactly why standard injection-molding inserts fail in 3D prints, and ultimately designing custom inserts optimized specifically for FDM printing. If you want to ensure your camera rig is as strong as mathematically possible, you need the right hardware.

🛠️ Pro-Tips for Your Next Build
Designing your own camera rig with Siraya Tech ABS HT and CNC Kitchen inserts? Keep these quick tips in mind:
1. Increase Your Perimeters
Don't rely on infill to hold your insert. Use at least 4-5 wall perimeters around your insert holes to ensure there is plenty of solid ABS to melt into the knurling.
2. Watch Your Temps
Set your soldering iron slightly above the melting point of the ABS (around 250°C - 270°C). Push gently and let the heat do the work. If you push too hard, you risk deforming the hole.
3. Design for the Hardware
Always check the specific hole dimensions required for the exact inserts you are using. A hole that is too tight will crack the print; a hole that is too loose will result in weak pull-out strength.
Combine the thermal & mechanical resilience of Siraya Tech ABS HT with heat-set inserts to build custom gear you actually trust in the field.
