For Aegis Clear & Aegis Matte

Thank you for choosing the Aegis Finishing System. This guide will help you use Aegis Clear and Aegis Matte to protect, strengthen, and beautify your 3D prints, transforming them from raw parts into professional-grade products.

1. Introduction: The Aegis Finishing System

The Aegis system is a line of advanced, water-based polyurethane coatings designed to solve the most common challenges in 3D print post-processing. Our core idea is to provide a solution that is powerful, easy to use, and safe.

  • Aegis Clear is your Functional Foundation. It’s a leveling base coat and protective sealer engineered to add strength, seal porous surfaces, and create a smooth, high-adhesion base.

  • Aegis Matte is your Aesthetic Finish. It’s a non-glare topcoat designed to hide layer lines and provide a premium "velvet" touch, making your parts look and feel like finished products.

2. Product Features

Aegis Clear (Gloss Sealer & Leveling Base)

  • Seals Fibers: Encapsulates sharp, irritating fibers on composite prints (PA-CF, PETG-CF) to make them smooth and skin-safe.

  • Blocks Moisture: Seals hygroscopic (water-absorbing) filaments like Nylon (PA) and PPA, preserving their stiffness and strength.

  • Durable Protection: Cures to a tough gloss finish that resists scuffs, moisture, and incidental isopropyl alcohol contact.

  • Self-Leveling: Acts as a primer, smoothing micro layer lines and creating a high-adhesion foundation for paint.

Aegis Matte (Layer-Line Hiding Topcoat)

  • Hides Layer Lines: The ultra-matte finish diffuses light, visually minimizing FDM layer lines for a clean, injection-mold-like appearance.

  • Premium "Velvet" Touch: Cures to a dry, non-sticky, and non-glare surface that resists fingerprints and feels premium to the touch.

  • Photo-Ready Finish: The uniform, non-reflective surface is ideal for product photography, enclosures, and models where glare is undesirable.

  • Topcoat Only: Designed as a final finishing layer.

3. How to Apply

(1) Preparation:

Deep Clean: Ensure your 3D print is clean, dry, and completely free of dust, oils, or uncured resin.

Alcohol Wipe: For the best adhesion, wipe the surface of the model with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to remove any remaining contaminants.

Dry Thoroughly: Allow the part to air dry completely before starting the coating process.

Stir Gently: Stir the product thoroughly. Do not shake, as this introduces air bubbles that can cause "mottling" or white spots on the finish.

(2) Usage 1. Manual (Brush) Application

This is the simplest method, requiring no special tools.

  • Select the Right Tool: Use a high-quality, soft-bristle brush. Choose a brush size that is appropriate for the scale of your model.

  • Small Amounts, Multiple Times: Aegis is designed with high fluidity to fill gaps effectively. To avoid drip/sag risks (flow risk) and edge discoloration, do not load the brush heavily. Dip the brush lightly and apply in thin, even strokes.

  • Even Distribution: Apply a thin layer and spread it evenly across the surface. If the surface isn't fully covered, dip the brush again for a small amount and continue. NEVER pour Aegis directly onto the model.

  • Drying: Allow the coat to become touch-dry (~20–30 minutes) or bake at 50°C for 10 minutes.

(3) Usage 2. Spray Application (Airbrush or HVLP)

This method provides the most uniform, professional finish, especially on large or complex parts.

  • Dilute: Mix 10–20% with clean (distilled) water.

  • Tack Coat: Apply a light, misting "tack coat" first. Let it flash off for 5–10 minutes.

  • Wet Coats: Apply subsequent light, wet coats, allowing drying time between each.

4. Using Aegis Clear & Aegis Matte Together

For the ultimate finish, use the products as a 2-step system.

  • Step 1: The Base (Aegis Clear): Apply 1–3 coats as a primer to fill lines and seal the part.

  • Step 2: The Topcoat (Aegis Matte): Once the base is dry, apply 1–2 coats of Matte to remove gloss and add the velvet feel.

Important: Aegis Matte is a final topcoat only. Do not apply Clear or paint over Matte, as it will not adhere properly.

5. Cleaning and Storage

  • Tools Cleaning: Clean tools immediately with warm, soapy water. Cured product can only be removed by sanding.

  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place (~25°C). Unopened shelf life is 36 months; use within 12 months once opened.

  • Skinning: If a film forms on top, skim it off before use.

  • Dilution: Always decant the amount needed into a separate cup before adding water. Never pour diluted product back into the original bottle.

6 Troubleshooting & Pro-Tips

Issue

Potential Cause

Solution

Peeling or Flaking

Surface contamination (dust/oils).

Ensure the model is wiped with alcohol and dried before coating.

White Marks / Mottling

Uneven application or air bubbles.

Apply in thinner, more even coats; stir (don't shake) the product.

Edge Discoloration

Excessive product pooling at edges.

Use less product on the brush; apply multiple thin coats instead of one heavy coat.

Drips / Runs

Over-application due to high fluidity.

Reduce the amount of product per dip; brush out any pools immediately.

Satin Finish

Desired semi-gloss look.

Blend Aegis Clear and Aegis Matte in a 1:1 ratio.

7. Safety & First Aid

Aegis coatings are water-based, low-odor, and very safe for home or workshop use when handled properly.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area.

  • Avoid contact with eyes and prolonged contact with skin.

  • Do not ingest. Keep out of reach of children.

  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

  • Skin Contact: Wash the affected area with soap and water.

  • Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water and seek medical attention immediately, showing this guide or the product bottle.
