Moisture Resistance Test Comparison for Resin Printing

Two Tenacious Lava Black Resin prints. One coated with Aegis Clear, one left bare. Both went into water.

After two hours, the difference was already clear. After 24 hours, it was even bigger.

Why protect resin prints from moisture?

Resin parts can take on water, especially when they are soaked or live in a humid place. As a part absorbs water, it gets heavier and it gets more flexible. For parts that need to stay stiff and keep their shape, that matters.

Aegis Clear is a clear, glossy surface coating for resin and filament prints. We wanted to see how much it helps when a print is sitting in water.

The water test: coated vs. uncoated

We used two identical prints made from Siraya Tech Tenacious Lava Black Resin. One was left uncoated. The other was coated with Aegis Clear and allowed to dry. We weighed both, then put them in water and checked them again after 2 hours and 24 hours.

We compared two things:

  • Weight: how much water each part took on
  • Flexibility: how much easier each part bent by hand after soaking

Sample Before After 2 Hours After 24 Hours
Uncoated 3.2 g 3.4 g 3.9 g
Aegis Clear Coated 3.7 g 3.7 g 4.0 g

After 2 hours

The uncoated print had already picked up noticeably more weight and was easier to flex. The Aegis Clear print stayed closer to its starting weight and kept more of its stiffness.

Aegis Clear coated — 3.7 g

After 24 hours

The gap grew. The uncoated print kept gaining weight and became much more flexible. The coated print stayed much closer to how it started.

Flexibility after 24 hours in water

The version without a coating became noticeably softer after absorbing water, allowing it to bend significantly. The version with a coating, by contrast, only bent slightly.

Size comparison after 24 hours

After soaking in water for 24 hours, the uncoated print swelled significantly due to water absorption, while the coated print remained virtually unchanged.

This was a simple side-by-side test with one resin, so treat it as a real-world demonstration, not a lab report. Results will vary with the resin, the coating coverage and how long the part stays wet.

How to apply Aegis Clear to a resin print

  1. Prepare the print. Clean and fully cure it, then let it dry completely. Wipe off any dust.
  2. Brush on an even coat. Cover every surface you want to protect. Check edges, recesses and the underside, where spots are easy to miss.
  3. Let it dry fully. Follow the drying time on the product page before the part touches water.
  4. Check coverage. Look for missed spots and touch them up. On a new resin, try a small test piece first.

Frequently asked questions

Does Aegis Clear make resin prints waterproof?

In our test it clearly reduced how much weight and flexibility the print gained in water. It adds moisture protection, but we don't promise permanent waterproofing for every part.

Will I get the same result with every resin?

Results vary by resin. We tested Tenacious Lava Black Resin. Try the coating on your own resin and conditions first.

Will Aegis Clear change how my print looks?

It adds a glossy clear finish. If appearance matters, test it on a small area first.

Give your next print extra protection

Two hours in water was enough to show the difference, and 24 hours made it obvious. If your resin parts will meet water or humidity, add a coat of Aegis Clear to your finishing routine.
